Developing the environment in which people gather to worship week by week is challenging and also highly rewarding. Approaching the process in a spirit of unprejudiced inquiry and humility is key to ensuring that the right questions are asked, and the right information is gathered and translated into a physical structure that reflects your church's vision.
Since the needs of each congregation are different, a specific consulting process must be tailored to suit your church's needs. The process usually includes some or all of the following services:

Visioning
In Visioning we define both personal and community visions for the work and worship of God, and develop a plan that will enable your congregation to live out its core values.
Visioning cultivates consensus within the church helps a congregation feel ownership in, and responsibility for, its vision.
Vision-driven leadership is transformative, and, if properly implemented, propels the congregation into a community of achievement and accountability.
Fees for this service range from $1500- $5000.
Defining Ministry Goals and Objectives
Mortar follows ministry.
It is our philosophy that each church should only build facilities for specific ministry needs. The consultant develops ministry goals and objectives through meetings and discussions with the major ministry groups of the congregation, to pinpoint the specific goals and objectives of each ministry and to investigate how each ministry activity supports the Vision and Mission Statement of the congregation.
Fees for this service range from $500- $1500.
Analyzing Existing Facilities
How efficiently is your space used?
Is there a better way to use each space?
Are there building code violations? Mechanical or structural problems? Is the space handicap accessible?
Analyzing existing facilities can help you assess these and other potential roadblocks.
Fees for this service range from $500- $2500.
Preparing an Architectural Program
Preparing an Architectural Program of requirements is the ultimate goal of preliminary evaluation and analysis. In preparation for facility master planning, an architectural program is created, taking into account the qualitative and quantitative space needs of the church, the existing facility's usability, and what new facilities are necessary.
Eventually, the Master Plan will be measured against the Architectural Program to ensure that the site will conform to the needs and desires of the congregation.
Fees for this service range from $1500- 3000.
Evaluating Existing or Proposed Sites
Known factors that influence the property, such as zoning or deed restrictions, vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and environmental features, are analyzed and the information is formulated to set guidelines and parameters for future development. While evaluating existing or proposed sites, the consultant may also prepare a diagrammatic land use planning study or evaluate different sites if an existing church is changing locations.
Fees for this service range from $500-$1500.
Developing a Master Plan
Having a visually rendered site plan showing the future development of the church is helpful before beginning a serious capital funds campaign.
In drafting a Master Plan, the architectural program and the site analysis contribute to the creation of diagrams showing how the land and buildings might be developed. The church's committees and congregation help to select and refine a single plan which is then translated into a graphic presentation for the development of the church.
During this phase, the consultant gives a presentation on the overall progress of the project, important benchmarks, results of the Architectural Program, and the solutions created by the Master Plan.
Fees for this service range from $2500-$5000.
Developing Conceptual Schematic Design
In common terms, this is where a "floor plan" is created, and supplemented by three-dimensional displays if necessary. In conjunction with a Master Plan, a Conceptual Schematic Design provides the necessary support to launch a capital funds campaign.
Fees for this service range from $1500-$2500.
Conducting Workshops
The liturgical renewal movement of the last 40 years has prompted congregations to explore the changes the settings in which they worship. In our workshops, the development and patterns of worship from throughout history are presented to give a more complete understanding of how church buildings may be reordered to more accurately reflect a modern style of worship. Christian symbols, sacred space, and places of liturgical action- the bath, the table, and the word- are also discussed.
Workshops are tailored to the specific needs of each congregation, worship committee, or ministry, and fees are based on an estimate of time involved in planning and presenting each workshop.
Liturgical Design Consulting
Each consultation is tailored specifically to your congregation. A liturgical design consultation typically evaluates areas of your church such as the entrance, threshold, and transition space, gathering and commons areas, congregational seating, altar table, pulpit, lectern, ambo, font, baptistery, and pool. Depending upon the results of the consultation, we may focus on the design of a few pieces of furniture, or on the coordination of the entire installation of furniture, fixtures, and fine art in your worship environment.
Fees for this service are based on an estimate of the time that will be involved in the consultation.
